Award recognizes support of standardization as a management tool

CHICAGO, Oct. 10, 2012- Today the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) awarded Ed Piñero, Chief Sustainability Officer of Veolia Water North America, its 2012 Howard Coonley Medal, part of its 2012 Leadership and Service Awards. The award recognizes Piñero’s work to benefit the economy through standardization as a management tool.
ANSI's mission is to enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the quality of life in America by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity. To this end, ANSI oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector.

Piñero was recognized for significantly contributing to national and international standardization activities in regards to his efforts to establish a water stewardship standard. Piñero has been involved with a variety of ANSI-supported ISO standards for over 18 years, and currently chairs the Energy Management System Standard international committee.

In addition to his ISO work, Piñero is currently helping to pilot early drafts of the Global Water Stewardship Standard with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. The Global Water Stewardship Standard is a performance-driven rating and certification approach under development by the Alliance for Water Stewardship.
“Ed’s efforts around environment-related standards development are in line with Veolia’s mission to protect valuable water resources. This award is not only recognition of his work, but it serves as an important reminder of the work that still remains to be done in protecting our natural resources,” said Laurent Auguste, president and CEO of Veolia Water Americas.
The award was formally presented at the 2012 ANSI Awards Reception Banquet and Ceremony on Wednesday, October 10th in Washington, DC.
