Veolia Environmental Services Awarded Mercury Lamp Recycling Contract

Hazardous Waste Division to Provide Services to the State of Maine

LOMBARD, Ill. –Veolia ES Technical Solutions, LLC, the hazardous waste division of Veolia Environmental Services North America, has been awarded the National Electrical Manufacturers Association’s (NEMA) contract for the collection, transport and recycling of household mercury-added lamps in the state of Maine.

The company responded to a request for proposal (RFP) from NEMA after the state passed legislation in 2009 that required the manufacturers of mercury-added lamps, sold or distributed for household use, to implement an approved recycling program for the lamps.

“We are pleased to have been selected to establish an efficient, effective system for the recycling of mercury-added lamps that fit within the parameters of NEMA’s request,” said John McShane, Branch Manager of Veolia ES Technical Solutions.The contract will require Veolia to:
  • Perform regular scheduled pickup of mercury-added lamps from between 100- 500 municipal and retail collection sites across Maine
  • Safely and legally transport, process and dispose of collected materials for recycling
  • Provide toll-free customer service and support
  • Furnish annual reports on collection locations, total number of lamps recycled and additional performance data
The term of the contract between Veolia ES Technical Solutions and NEMA is one year
with automatic one-year renewals.
