LOMBARD, Ill. – Veolia ES Technical Solutions, L.L.C., the hazardous waste division of Veolia Environmental Services North America, is pleased to announce that its two Port Washington, Wis., facilities have achieved registration to the Responsible Recycling©: 2008 (R2) Program for electronics recyclers. The registration certificates were issued by SGS US Testing Company, Inc. U.S. EPA worked closely with stakeholders, including recyclers, equipment manufacturers, representatives of state government, trade associations and public interest groups to develop the Responsible Recycling Practices for Electronics Recyclers (R2) standards. The certification program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute-American Society of Quality National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

“Proper handling of e-waste is extremely important to Veolia and our customers,” said John McShane, Electronics Recycling Division General Manager for Veolia ES Technical Solutions. “The R2 Registration provides the public and our customers the assurance they need to know that their electronic waste will be handled properly.” The R2 program is designed to ensure that certified R2 recyclers properly handle electronic waste (e-waste) that may contain potentially harmful materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium.
The R2 certified recycler must also utilize an environmental, health, and safety management system, minimize exposures or emissions during recycling operations, and promote reuse and material recovery. If electronics will be sold for reuse, the R2 recycler must show that all data are cleared or destroyed, that the equipment has been tested to see if it works, and that the equipment is packaged properly. An R2 recycler must exercise due diligence to ensure appropriate management of the materials throughout the recycling chain, whether domestic or international.
“Programs such as ISO 14001, R2 and OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) support our integrated quality, health, safety and environmental management system to improve performance at all locations across the country,” commented Bob Garner, Vice President Compliance and Quality. “Our OSHA VPP sites, and now the two Port Washington facilities, set the performance goals for our entire company.”
