Sturbridge, Mass. and Veolia Win Prestigious Environmental Award for Management of Public Water System

Partnership recognized for outstanding environmental performance

STURBRIDGE, Mass., May 23, 2013 – The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), the state agency responsible for ensuring clean water, has honored the partnership between Sturbridge, Mass. and Veolia Water North America (Veolia) with a Regional Recognition Award. MassDEP’s award recognizes the strong commitment to the environment made by drinking water facilities across the state.
Sturbridge was selected by the regional MassDEP office, which recognized it as the most exemplary facility in the region in 2012. Veolia partners with Sturbridge to manage the city’s groundwater treatment plant under a public-private partnership arrangement that has lasted more than 20 years, with a stellar record of environmental compliance.
"The ratepayers of Sturbridge should be commended for their continued, proactive investment in their water system," said Shaun A. Suhoski, Town Administrator. "Being recognized in the top five percent of all public water suppliers is also a testament to the leadership of DPW Director Greg Morse and Veolia Project Manager Shane Moody."
Winners of the Regional Recognition Award are selected by one of the state’s four MassDEP regional offices. Each of these regional offices chooses a public water system which is notable among its peers. The Sturbridge water facility was chosen because it has undertaken a number of water system improvements recently that have vastly improved the customer's water quality.
To improve water quality, operators in Sturbridge have focused on improvements to corrosion control, to fluoridation, and on iron and manganese removal. They have also added a SCADA system and inactivated a well so that the plant could be upgraded. Through all this, they had to contend with drought impacts throughout the town, and have maintained service with no disruptions.
“Access to safe and reliable drinking water is the bedrock of our communities and our economies,” said Laurent Auguste, president and CEO of Veolia Water Americas. “Sturbridge understands this, and it’s an honor to work side-by-side with them to win this award. The demands on our water systems will only increase, and forward-thinking towns like Sturbridge are making sure that their water systems are ‘growing blue’ by effectively managing them with an eye toward the future.”
MassDEP presented the award to Sturbridge and Veolia at a ceremony at Springfield Community College.
