HOW "GREEN STEAM" CAN HELP YOU EARN LEED® POINTS IN BOSTON AND CAMBRIDGE
Veolia’s district energy system in Boston and Cambridge can help developers and building owners achieve significant points under the U.S. Green Building Council® (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (LEED) green building program.
Veolia’s Boston-Cambridge district energy system meets all the pre-requisites in LEED® for Building Design and Construction: New Construction and Major Renovations and we’ve developed a model and “Points Calculator” to verify the LEED credits a building project can potentially earn. Although there are several variables that determine the credits that can be earned by connecting to Veolia’s “Green Steam” system, CHP adds up for LEED credits.
THE “GREEN STEAM” MATH:
- 8 or 9 points is meaningful. By tying into Veolia’s system a customer can earn 8 or 9 more efficiency points for its project than using on-site boilers.
- For every 1MMBtu of steam required, the building receives credit for 553kWh of free electricity as a result of cogenerated steam.
- Veolia’s “Green Steam” requires lower upfront capital. In addition, the LEED points gained by using district energy means less capital investment that may have been required to gain LEED points.
- Steam cooling can earn even more points. If a building owner wants to use steam to generate cooling through adsorption technology, then it is possible to achieve all 19 available energy efficiency points.
