LEAGUE CITY, Tex. (March 17, 2010) – Veolia ES Industrial Services Inc. is pleased to announce that its on-site program at Marathon Petroleum Company LLC in Robinson, Ill. has been accepted into OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). At a ceremony yesterday, OSHA recognized Veolia’s Bridgeport Core and Ashland Separations groups for its outstanding efforts in achieving exemplary occupational safety and health compliance. Veolia’s Marathon Petroleum on-site program joins the VPP at the Star Award level, the highest level granted.

Mike Rose, president and CEO of Veolia ES Industrial Services, celebrated the achievement of his colleagues. “Our teams work hard every day, often under dangerous conditions. Therefore it is paramount that we are diligent in providing health and safety programs that fully protect our employees and our customers. I am very proud of our onsite team at Marathon Petroleum, as well as our customer, for meeting such rigorous requirements.”
Veolia ES Industrial Services’ on-site program at the Marathon Petroleum facility was recognized for achieving and maintaining five VPP best practices during the OSHA audit. These included a Safety Opportunity Shared (SOS) form, Act Now for Safety Program, employee safety perception survey, behavioral-based safety observations and new hire orientation. “Our safety warrior employees’ involvement and dedication were critical factors in achieving approval into OSHA’s VPP star program,” said Debra Phillips, VPP coordinator, Veolia ES Industrial Services. “We are committed to safety excellence, our values drive our thoughts, our words and our actions. This achievement is a demonstration of that commitment.”
In addition to the VPP Star achievement at the Marathon facility, two of the company’s on-site programs for Valero Energy Corporation have received OSHA’s ‘Star among Stars’ award. Veolia ES Industrial Services’ teams at Corpus Christi and Three Rivers, both in Texas, have been given OSHA’s Region VI “Star among Star” award for having an incident rate 90% below the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) rate for their industry.
OSHA believes continuous improvement of safety and health programs are the best way to prevent occupational illnesses and injuries. The VPP was created in 1982 to encourage industry-related facilities to strive for safety excellence. VPP sites have shown that their commitment to employee protection extends beyond the OSHA standards. Companies who achieve the VPP Star Award display injury and illness rates at or below the national average of their competitors.
