Westborough, Massachusetts

The challenge

Community benefits from long-term partnership with Veolia North America for water services.

The project challenges are:

  • When the town brought its new 3.5-MGD multi-media filtration surface water/groundwater treatment plant online in 1996, it turned to Veolia, which had provided six years of outstanding services to the community's regional wastewater treatment plant.

  • At the end of the initial contract, the town renewed Veolia’s agreement for a total of 20 years and added the operations/maintenance/management (O&M) of a 2-MGD greensand iron/manganese removal plant. We also operate the raw water pump station, pressure booster tanks, water storage tanks and have assisted with a Security Vulnerability Assessment.

The solution

Innovative solutions:

  • Upgrade water treatment facility's communication system, installing a superior digital radio telemetry system to ensure immediate notification of any irregularity in plant operations

  • Provide for dramatic improvements to systems and analyzers that direct chemical feed, resulting in more consistent operation and better quality water

  • Replace motors at water facility with more energy-efficient varieties to reduce power consumption

  • Install pH meters and turbid meters to raw water intake to improve monitoring of surface and raw water quality

  • Perform more than 5,800 analyses on Westborough water each year to ensure a high-quality product for residents

  • Initiate significant improvements in security, including adding intrusion alarms, improved lighting and motion detectors and keyed entry systems
