Centre Hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal

The challenge

State-of-the-art patient-centered hospital in Montréal will be one of the largest academic medical centers in North America.

Currently under construction in the heart of the Quartier de la Santé in east downtown Montréal, the new Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) and its Research Centre (CRCHUM) is the largest public-private partnership (P3) in North America.  As one of two major hospital networks in Montréal, CHUM is associated with the Université de Montréal — a prominent teaching hospital comprising three sites covering two city blocks.

The project challenges are:

  • The CHUM Collectif Consortium, of which Veolia is a 20 percent partner, is developing this new 3.5-million-square-foot hospital complex and energy plant to serve 345,000 ambulatory patients, 22,000 inpatients and 65,000 emergency patients each year.

Veolia’s solution

Innovative plans:

  • Hosting more than 10,000 employees and 6,000 students, the hospital will accommodate 770 single-patient rooms, ambulatory and diagnostic care, surgery, intensive care, and clinical laboratories.
  • Slated to be one of the largest academic medical centers in North America, CHUM will also incorporate a public research center in Québec as well as a major educational training center, comprising a bio-industries pavilion, public health campus and a university medical school.

Results

Under a 34-year agreement, Veolia is a shareholder and service provider for this massive hospital project, which is slated to be complete in 2020.  The first major completion phase will be in 2016, where 85 percent of the hospital will be fully operational and Veolia will begin providing maintenance, life-cycle and energy performance management, and security services.  It was also stated by the refinery operations group that it would no longer be necessary to pull the bundles during scheduled maintenance, establishing this chemical cleaning solution as the standard operating procedure.
