OUR ACID TECHNOLOGY CENTER

Veolia’s sulfuric acid and sulfur gas management solutions are backed by a team of dedicated experts. Our Acid Technology Center boasts 18 engineers - and nearly 30 personnel in total - who exclusively support our sulfuric acid, sulfur gas, and high-value sulfur derivatives activities. This team brings hundreds of years of combined experience in working with fuming acid products like sulfur trioxide, chlorosulfonic acid and oleum, along with spent acids and sulfuric acid regeneration. It also has expertise in high-quality variants and electrolyte (non-fuming) acid.
 

FOCUSED ON BEST PRACTICES

Veolia’s Acid Technology Center not only troubleshoots and solves sulfur management problems, but is keenly focused on establishing and sharing best practice solutions across our organization and network of sulfuric acid facilities. Our Acid Technology Center engineers are world-class experts in their field, and work closely with our environmental, process safety and operational teams to solve operational, maintenance and technical challenges for our customers and operating sites. They are also intimately involved in new business development activities, such as acceptance of non-alky spent acids; modifying facilities to accommodate customer quality or processing requirements; and new sulfur-based ventures.  Other key areas of involvement include product quality management, capital coordination and execution, product stewardship, technical service, and site maintenance and reliability support.

  • Carrier assessment and training
  • Best practices — procedures and equipment such as storage tanks, handling equipment, PPE, hoses, pumps, fittings, instrumentation, etc. 
  • Adding capability at our facilities to increase supply chain flexibility and reduce refinery limitations
  • Providing engineering alternatives to improve reliability of our on-site facilities
  • Improving product quality for refinery-specific concerns or considerations
  • ​Assistance during refinery upsets to support return to normal operations

Veolia’s network of sulfuric acid plants across the United States includes:
  • The Burnside "hybrid" sulfuric acid regeneration (SAR) and sulfur burning facility, capable of producing both fuming and non-fuming acids, located in Darrow, LA.
  • Three sulfuric acid regeneration and sulfur gas recovery (SAR/SGR) facilities for refinery customers in Delaware City, DE; El Paso, TX; and Elizabeth, NJ.
  • Sulfur burning plants in Cincinnati, OHRichmond, VA; and Wurtland, KY, capable of producing both fuming and non-fuming acids.

We operate according to a Goal Zero culture, which is focused on continuous improvement toward an overarching goal of zero injuries, zero incidents and zero impacts on the environment. 
 
Our sulfuric acid sites are ISO 14000 certified and subject to the Responsible Care® program under the American Chemistry Council (ACC), which verifies industry standards are met for community awareness, emergency response, occupational safety, process safety, transportation (distribution), environmental stewardship, product stewardship and security.
