Partnership recognized for restoring wastewater facilities after Hurricane Katrina disaster; community participation and emergency preparedness
NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 6, 2011 - The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans and Veolia Water North America, the world leader in water and wastewater services, have received a 2011 Infrastructure Award from the National Council for Public-Private Partnerships (NCPPP). The award recognizes the outstanding success the partnership has achieved in operating and maintaining the region's infrastructure.
NCPPP, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to facilitating government innovation, highlighted the partnership's work restoring wastewater facilities in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the quick restoration of wastewater service to meet EPA's deadline helped ensure public health and environmental protection. Veolia Water and Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans also make community service a major priority, giving back to the city through local school programs, environmental-based internships and work with underprivileged communities.
The partnership is recognized for its environmental compliance, and recently earned Gold and Silver Awards from the National Associations of Clean Water Agencies in 2010. It has saved taxpayers more than $20 million since inception.
"Maintaining wastewater infrastructure is a major component of protecting the public health," said Keavin Nelson, president of Veolia Water North America's east region. "We're honored to receive this award along with the City of New Orleans."
